I grew up in Southern CA, to parents who immigrated for the “American dream”. My mother worked her whole career in America as an inpatient, behavioral health Registered Nurse which put a roof over our heads, and food on our table. As a family, we grew to not only respect the field for what is provided for us but to understand that all human beings have mental health that needs to be taken care of.
Through her work, my mom mastered her English and worked with difficult patients who were not necessarily functioning at their best.
Watching my mom I learned that all people from all cultures and all walks of life need compassionate care. That our ideas, our stories, our memories, our sanity, and our communication skills are what unifies us as human beings.
As a clinician, I can’t ignore the psychiatric component of every medical condition we study, research, observe and diagnose for our patients. Every piece of news we hear from our providers good, or bad, has a consequence on our mental health. Through healthcare, I aim to ease pain, prolong lives, and reduce the healthcare disparities I’ve felt as a gender-expansive, clinician of color.
In practice, I draw from my experiences as a mental health worker in adult and adolescent inpatient psych at Vista Del Mar Hospital, a specialized behavioral health track at the Touro College School of Health Sciences Manhattan, and working with the LGBTQIA + community alleviating gender dysphoria.
I want to give my patients the tools they need to function at their optimal selves, to cope, to survive, and to thrive in all the situations, environments, and relationships that life has to offer. I get to witness the miracle of the human mind and the human spirit every day at work. It’s truly a luxury and I feel humbled and honored to be a small part of my patients’ lives.
