Does health insurance cover therapy? Yes! Most health insurance plans include coverage for therapy. However, finding a therapist who accepts your insurance in the Chicago area can sometimes be tricky. Because mental health care is in high demand, there can be long waitlists. Additionally, some therapists do not accept insurance at all.
This doesn’t mean you should give up or get discouraged! It is possible to find in-network therapy in Chicago. Knowing where to look is key, and we are here to help.
Keep reading to learn how to find a therapist who accepts your insurance in Chicago. We’ll go over why finding an in-network provider matters, how to find one, questions to ask before your first session, and common insurance plans accepted by therapists in the Chicago area. We’ll also cover options to explore if you can’t find an in-network therapist. Let’s get started!
Finding an in-network therapist is one of the best ways to keep your out-of-pocket costs as low as possible. When your out-of-pocket costs are affordable, it can be easier to start and continue therapy without added financial stress. When you don’t use insurance, therapy can cost anywhere from $100 to $400 per session, depending on where you go. Additionally, providers who offer specialized services, work in an urban area, or have doctorate-level training may cost even more. Frequent visits at such a high cost are not realistic for most people.
However, depending on your insurance plan, sessions with an in-network therapist may cost anywhere between $0 and $50 each.
There are other benefits to finding a provider who is in-network. Seeing an in-network therapist means you won’t have to deal with getting a superbill (a detailed receipt for your therapy services) and requesting reimbursement from your insurance company, as you may with out-of-network benefits.
Once you reach your out-of-pocket maximum (if applicable), your plan will generally cover 100% of eligible in-network treatment costs for the remainder of the plan year. If you have an annual deductible to meet, eligible payments you make for therapy sessions can also count toward it.
There’s more than one way to find a therapist who accepts your insurance in Chicago. It may take a little research to find a provider who is both in-network with your plan and a good fit for your needs. Here are a few places to start:
Once you find a therapist you want to see, verify your insurance coverage to make sure that they are in-network with your specific healthcare plan.
Before you schedule your first therapy appointment, you may want to ask your insurance company and therapy clinic a few questions. This can help you better understand your coverage, what you may have to pay out of pocket, and avoid unexpected costs or bills.
To contact your insurance company, call the member services phone number on your insurance card. Here are some helpful questions to ask before scheduling your first appointment:

The insurance verification process should take a few minutes or less. Once your benefits are verified, you can move on to the next steps. Asking about things like cancellation policies can help you avoid unexpected fees.
There are a lot of different insurance companies out there. Maybe you’re looking for health insurance coverage and aren’t sure who to go with. Or, you might want to know how likely it is that you’ll find an in-network therapist. These are some common insurance plans accepted by most therapists in Chicago and the surrounding areas.
If you don’t have insurance coverage right now or can’t find an in-network therapist, you still have options.
If you can’t find an in-network therapist who is a good match for you to see in person, there are a few other options you can explore:
For starters, if there’s a therapist you feel would be a good fit but cannot meet with them, it can be worth reaching out to them or their clinic to ask about your options. They may know of helpful resources or be able to recommend a similar provider who is in-network.
Many health insurance plans cover virtual therapy, not just in-person appointments. If you cannot find an in-person, in-network provider near you, consider trying an online therapist!
Online therapy can be effective, convenient, and, for many people, more accessible. Finding an in-network therapist who is licensed in your state and offers online appointments can expand your options for using your health insurance for therapy. This may be particularly helpful for people in rural or designated shortage areas.[2]
Sometimes, people opt to pay out of pocket when they can’t find an in-network therapist. If it’s possible for you, this can significantly expand your options. Some clinics and therapists also accept HSA/FSA funds and credit cards for self-pay services.
For some people, using out-of-network benefits may be an option if they can’t find an in-network therapist. If your plan includes out-of-network benefits, you’ll typically pay the full cost of your therapy services.[3]
Then, you can ask your therapist for a superbill, which is an itemized receipt detailing the services you received. You can submit the superbill to your insurance company to request reimbursement based on your plan’s out-of-network benefits.
Before choosing this option, contact your insurance company to confirm whether your plan includes out-of-network mental health benefits and what portion of the cost may be reimbursed.
When it comes to accessing therapy, insurance coverage can make a world of difference. You should feel comfortable completing the number of sessions you need in order to get the most out of therapy. Something meant to help you shouldn’t be adding unnecessary stress to your life.
