Most major health insurance plans cover mental health treatments, including medications like Lexapro, but coverage can vary between providers. To find out if your specific plan includes Lexapro, you should contact your insurance provider directly and inquire about coverage for mental health medications.
Even with insurance, a small out-of-pocket cost for Lexapro is common. Alternatively, you can ask your pharmacy to check your insurance coverage and provide a price estimate for the medication.
How much does Lexapro cost without insurance? Unfortunately, there isn’t a straightforward answer, as the price varies based on several factors. As of August 2024, the cost of a 30-day supply of Lexapro (brand name) at major pharmacies ranged from $450 to $540, while the generic version, Escitalopram, cost between $15 and $120. Factors influencing the price include the quantity purchased, the pharmacy you choose, and whether you opt for the generic or brand-name version.
There are several ways to reduce the cost. For example, you can explore options like buying in bulk, using manufacturer coupons, taking advantage of retailer promotions, or accessing discounts through health plans or government programs like Medicare Part D or Medicaid. Additionally, choosing generic alternatives can lead to even greater savings, as they are generally more affordable than brand-name medications.
Please Note: Clarity Clinic does not accept Medicaid.
If you are considering pregnancy, it's crucial to inform your healthcare provider so they can help you manage your medications effectively. Individuals with major depressive disorder (MDD) who plan to become pregnant face significant decisions. Leaving MDD untreated poses risks to both the fetus and the mother. Therefore, it’s essential to have a thorough discussion with your prescriber and care team about the potential risks and benefits of continuing treatment.
Escitalopram is generally taken once daily, with or without food. Patients usually start with a low dose that is gradually increased over several weeks.
The typical dosage ranges from 10 mg to 20 mg, but only your healthcare provider can determine the right dose for you.
For the liquid form, use a dosing spoon or oral syringe, available from your pharmacy.
If you’re taking escitalopram, avoid using other medications containing citalopram (Celexa®).
The best time to take Lexapro for anxiety is whenever you are most likely to remember to take it consistently. Additionally, if you notice Lexapro makes you feel sleepy, take it at night. If you notice Lexapro keeps you from getting sleep, take it in the morning. Make sure to check in with your healthcare provider before making any changes to your medication routine.
It’s important to avoid alcohol and illegal drugs while taking antidepressants. These substances can reduce the effectiveness of your medication, potentially worsening your condition, and can also increase the risk of side effects, such as sedation.
Common side effects include headache, nausea, dry mouth, diarrhea, increased sweating, fatigue, feelings of nervousness or restlessness, and difficulty sleeping (insomnia). These symptoms often get better within the first week or two as your body adjusts to the medication.
Lexapro can cause sexual side effects in both males and females. Men may experience a reduced sex drive, difficulty achieving or maintaining an erection, or delayed or absent ejaculation. Women may notice a decrease in sexual desire, delayed orgasm, or difficulty reaching orgasm. Sexual side effects often persist and may not diminish over time.
Rare and serious side effects can occur with any medication and may be influenced by individual risk factors. Please consult your prescriber to discuss the common side effects of this medication.
You may notice improvements in sleep, energy, or appetite within the first 1-2 weeks of treatment. These physical changes can be an early sign that the medication is starting to work. However, it may take 6-8 weeks for improvements in mood and interest in activities to become more noticeable.
