What is Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation?

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a treatment designed to help the brain function more effectively when depression hasn’t improved with medication. It uses magnetic pulses applied to the scalp to stimulate specific areas of the brain involved in mood, helping support lasting symptom relief.

  • Uses targeted magnetic pulses to stimulate areas of the brain linked to mood regulation;
  • Non-invasive (no surgery, no anesthesia);
  • Performed in-office while you’re awake;
  • No systemic medication side effects.

Your TMS Journey in Three Steps

Please note, you must be an Illinois resident currently residing in the state of Illinois to schedule a psychiatry appointment with Clarity Clinic.

default

Your Initial Consultation

Schedule your free Clarity Clinic TMS consultation to ask questions or discuss any concerns you may have about TMS. If you have no contraindications and are a suitable candidate, we will arrange a comprehensive in-person evaluation at one of our TMS clinics.

default

In-Person Evaluation

After your initial consultation, you will have an in-person TMS evaluation. This evaluation will give us the necessary information to request prior authorization for TMS coverage from your insurance provider. We will then schedule your initial and all subsequent treatment sessions.

default

Mapping & Treatment

Your first TMS appointment will begin with a 'mapping' session to determine your unique treatment intensity and location. During all your TMS sessions, you'll be reclined in a comfortable chair and be able to watch TV, listen to music, etc. After your sessions, you can drive and resume your day as usual.

What Happens During a TMS Session?

At Clarity Clinic, TMS includes repeated cycles with rest periods. A licensed physician handles the diagnosis while a trained TMS technician conducts remaining sessions. TMS therapy sessions typically:

  • Last approximately 19 minutes per session;
  • Are usually administered five days a week;
  • Treatment lasts 8-9 weeks, depending on your needs;
  • No recovery period means you can immediately get back to your usual activities.
